Supreme Court Ruling

I thought I would share in case anyone hadn't heard about this.

The Supreme Court ruled (5-4) that schools cannot use race as a factor for enrollment.

Supreme Court Justice John G. Edwards said, "the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race."

Clarence Thompson, the court's only African American justice, said he agreed with former Justice Harlen, when he said (in regards to the Plessy vs. Ferguson case), "Our Constitution is color-blind, and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens."

Former justice Henry Blackmun, a proponent of affirmative action said,
"I yield to no one in my earnest hope that the time will come when an "affirmative action" program is unnecessary and is, in truth, only a relic of the past. I would hope that we could reach this stage within a decade, at the most. But the story of Brown v. Board of Education, (1954), decided almost a quarter of a century ago, suggests that that hope is a slim one. At some time, however, beyond any period of what some would claim is only transitional inequality, the United States must and will reach a stage of maturity where action along this line is no longer necessary. Then persons will be regarded as persons, and discrimination of the type we address today will be an ugly feature of history that is instructive, but that is behind us."

This was in 1977-1978, regarding Regents of the University of California v. Bakke. 30 years later, one would hope that we have reached a time in society when affirmative action is a "relic of the past" and we can treat those of minorities as equals, not as special cases, as if they have a handicap, who need our help. I know that racism is not (and probably never will be) eradicated, but let's have a color-blind government, based upon a color-blind Constitution, to lead the way!

I didn't originally intend to use a bunch of quotes, but I found them pretty interesting. I'm probably preaching to the choir here, so to speak, but I thought this was pertinent to us as college students, as it could affect us in the future.

NeW News!

Network of enlightened Women joined with Students For Life to stand up for Rights of the Unborn! (check out Tuesday’s State Press)

Monday—January, 22nd, 2007, was the 34th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. NeW and Students for Life built a Cemetery for the Innocents on the Student Services Lawn with over 500 white crosses to represent the 45 million babies on Saturday, February 10th.

Wednesday, January 31st, from 11:00 am—1:30 pm; we will be participating in ASU’s Organization Open House on Hayden Lawn. This is an opportunity to showcase our club and meet new people. As discussed on Monday night, we will have an activity that allows students to have a rubber-band gun shooting match with spinning targets. Kate Jordan will be actively teaching firearm safety as a preview of one of NeW's future events.

Valentine’s Day Celebration: as part of their movement the proponents of The Vagina Monologues proclaimed Valentine’s Day as “Vagina Day,” until the violence against women stops (Ensler). To counteract and celebrate the true reason of Valentine’s Day, we hope to ask a local florist to donate a number of roses so that NeW can join with the New Sexual Revolution and friends of NeW to sell the roses for $1-2 on campus; or we will get together to bake, decorate, and package heart-shaped sugar cookies and lollipops on Saturday, February 10th.

Wednesday, February 21st; The New Sexual Revolution will host Janet Smith, Chair of Life Ethics and author of Sexual Common Sense, she will speak out about the reasons for not using contraception. More details will follow.

First Week of March—Events to counter The Vagina Monologues: Educating women on why The V-Monologues are harmful to women; Writing op-eds and letters to the editors; Tabling on the mall each day (February 26—March 3); Co-hosting Dr. Jennifer Robeck Morse with the New Sexual Revolution; Passing out pamphlets which unveil the myths of The V-Monologues— This will be the biggest event that NeW has participated in, in its young history. We will need everybody’s help in networking with faculty and community members, educating students, compiling pamphlets, and giving our time to make the event with Dr. Morse a success.

For the Next Meeting - Read Chapters 1-2 of "Letters To A Young Conservative."
